FOUR

AREAS

FOR LIFE

Reflect on these four life arenas and mark each with a pluss or a minus depending on whether it currently gives you a surplus or deficit of life energy here and now.
Be aware that a life arena operating in deficit over time will consume more energy than it generates. That is why it can be vital to have several “legs to stand on.” True motivation always grows from multiple sources.
What does your personal “arena balance sheet” look like?

Which of these four arenas gives you the most energy?

When we talk about motivation and leadership, we think in terms of wholeness. This means that task and person cannot be separated—or, as a saying goes: “We see what you say” because “you are what you think.”
Even if we choose to view life as a whole, it is easy to see how the same life can appear divided into different “worlds” that seem to have little to do with one another. However, this is only on the surface. In real life, it is an illusion to separate the professional from the private, or task from person. Both psychologically and practically, what happens in our different life arenas affects us profoundly.
These connections are most visible when one of these “compartments” collapses or falls completely out of balance. When that happens, the total life situation—and personal energy and motivation—are significantly affected. To motivate, therefore, is to keep the whole in view: to encourage and facilitate good relationships and rich experiences across the most central arenas of life.

Three mirrors for quality of life

The four-leaf clover illustrates the entire SGL concept as both a quality – and a being project. – There is little value in excelling at work if your family is suffering, or in mastering your leisure life if your work is falling apart and your friendships are fading. Everything is connected. The four-leaf clover shows you—clearly and sometimes brutally—how things really are.
If you want to take a closer look at the facts, you can use our tools to explore more of the following areas. But notice: “Some things can be measured. Some things can only be felt. The four-leaf clover holds both — and the wisdom lies in knowing which is which.”

Love life

If you would like to take a quality check of your family life right now. – Let us repeat some words that both I and other priests read in wedding ceremonies all over the world. See if you recognize and live the message of 1 Cor. 13, when you look in a mirror, as in a riddle – that only you can answer!
ON GOOD CONVERSATION:
“If I speak in the tongues of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong.”
ON TIME AND SHARED EXPERIENCES:
“Love is patient, love is kind…”
ON THE GIFTS THAT TRULY GLADDEN THE HEART:
“When completeness comes, what is in part disappears.”
ON SHARED PROJECTS AND THE JOY OF CREATING TOGETHER:
“If I give all I possess…, but do not have love, I gain nothing.”
ON CLOSENESS AND EMOTIONAL LIFE:
“Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.”
If you feel that at least three of these statements truly reflect your life together with your partner or spouse, you are both fortunate and blessed.
If fewer than three resonate, it may be cause for concern.
Work life
For your job and professional life, we recommend testing yourself once a year using the Triple-T Test (TTT), described in Secret 8, Lesson 8.3. This helps you check whether your score matches your actual experience.
The scale ranges from about 15 to 45 points. If you score above 28, you likely have few concerns and can confidently contribute to making your workplace even better.
Friends and Leisure / Everyday Life and Happiness
There is also a test for this area. You will find it in Secret 5, Lesson 5.3. It looks at the many small and large events that have affected your life over the past 12 months.
If you score above 150 points, you should consider talking to someone and possibly seeking support.
